Turn your Apple iPhone into a full guitar rig with new interfaces from IK Multimedia and Peavey
Plug in heavyweight IK Multimedia and amp giant Peavy have gone head to head in a battle to win over guitarists owning an iPhone with two new amplifier and guitar FX modeling interfaces and apps.
IK Multimedia's Amplitube iRig app and interface look very impressive. Following on from the successful Amplitube plug in for Mac and PC, iRig features the same superb modeling technology, featuring amps, pedals and microphones.
The app itself comes in three varieties:
- The first is free to download from the Apple App Store and includes 3 stomp boxes, 1 amp + cabinet and 2 microphones.
- The LE version costs £1.79 and has 5 stompboxes, 1 amp + cabinet and 2 microphones.
- The full version costs £11.99 and boasts 11 stomp boxes, 5 amps, 5 cabinets and 2 microphones.
The iRig interface has a 1/4" jack input and headphone out socket and retails at £23.99
First impressions are that this is a highly portable plug-and-play device using the beautiful iPhone multi-touch screen to make selections and edit sounds. For less than £40 you can have the full rig plus interface. The obvious advantage is that for the practicing guitarist there is no longer a need to carry around extra practice devices. Simply take the iRig interface, which looks to be not much bigger than a jack plug itself, and your phone, which will probably be somewhere close to you anyway.

Peavey have joined forces with leading iPhone applications developer Agile Partners to create their new iPhone app and interface, the AmpKit LiNK. Working on a similar structure to the iRig, the AmpKit LiNK is a battery powered interface and apparently "raises the audio fidelity bar" using their revolutionary CrossTalk Eliminator. This eliminates any feedback a guitarist may encounter whilst using the device in conjunction with the iPhone.
Their is very little information currently available about the AmpKit LiNK other than it will work with current recording, processing and guitar tuning apps, including Agile Partners' GuitarToolkit.
The AmpKit LiNK is available on pre-order only at the moment at a RRP of $39.99 (US). Check out the images below.
