The EMU SP 1200 Sampler Workstation is an upgraded version of the original 1985 EMU SP12. Released in 1987, the SP 1200 omitted the drum sounds included with the SP12 but gave grater sampling capabilities, making it more on a par with the Akai MPC series sampler workstations. Up to 32 user samples could be loaded at any one time at 12 bit 26 kHz resolution which although limited in quality, gave the machine a tough, crunchy sound. It is for this reason the SP 1200 was such a popular choice amongst Hip Hop and House music producers such as Roni Size, Todd Terry, Freddy Fresh, Daft Punk and The Prodigy.

The main features of the machine are:
  • 100 patterns
  • 100 songs
  • 8 touch pads
  • 32 patch memory
  • 12 bit 26 kHz sampling
  • MIDI communication
