A giant amongst analogue synthesizers in the 1980's, the Oberheim OB-Xa analogue synthesizer became a familiar sound in many genres of popular music. There were originally 3 models to choose from giving the option of 4, 6 or 8 note polyphonic voice performance. The rich sound of the OB-Xa is credited to its use of the then new "Curtis" chipset, enabling a better 4-pole filter with switchable 12 or 24dB/oct slopes. The main difference between the OB-Xa and the OB-X is the ability to layer sounds giving the capacity for thick pads, punchy basses and a variety of effects. The OB-Xa did not ship with MIDI and had to be modified to sequence with MIDI hardware.

The synth was used by artists including:
Depeche Mode, Van Halen, Gary Numan, Jean Michel Jarre, New Order, Paul Sheafer, Prince, Queen, Jethro Tull, Stevie Nicks, Sneaker Pimps, Rush, Mike Oldfield, Richard Barbieri, the Thompson Twins and Bon Jovi.
