Match Song Tempo to a Sample Loop

Logic Tutorials, 09 September 2007

Learn how to match the tempo of a song in Logic Pro or Logic Express to the exact tempo of a sample loop in this lesson here at Logic Cafe. This lesson is also useful if you would simply like to quickly find the tempo of a sample for editing purposes.

For sample and loop based musicians, Logic Pro and Logic Express have a quick solution to getting a track started and keeping the creative flow going with this clever Tempo feature.

Note: In order for this feature to work properly you must apply a little musical knowledge beforehand:

Ensure you know the exact length of your sample loop in beats and bars
.

For the best results make sure you know the meter (time signature) of the loop and apply it in the transport bar

Step 1

In the Arrange page click on the audio loop you wish to use as your tempo base in order to select it. The loop in this example is 1 bar in length and is in the 4/4 time signature.

Step 2

Click in the Bar Ruler and drag the resulting green stripe to match the length in beats and bars of the sample. As the sample in this example is 1 bar in length, the green stripe is lengthened to 1 bar.

Note: If the sample had been 1.5 or 2 bars in length, the green stripe would have reflected this also.

Step 3

In the menu bar at the top of the screen select Options>Tempo>Adjust Tempo using Region Length and Locators.

Step 4

From the resulting pop-up dialogue box click the Globally button in order to change the tempo of the whole song to match your sample.

Note: If you click on Create in the dialogue box a tempo change will be created from the point of the green stripe in the Bar Ruler

Step 5

You have now performed a tempo change in Logic to match the tempo of your chosen sample. You should now see:
  • The green stripe in the Bar Ruler matches the length of your sample
  • The tempo in the Transport bar has changed

Enjoy!
